  • How does the ACC Planning Department issue public notice about zoning and development issues?

The ACC Planning Department relies upon a variety of media to issue public notice. For public notices required by local ordinance and state statutes, a legal advertisement is placed in the Athens Banner Herald and a sign is posted on the subject property. Email notifications are sent out via the Neighborhood Notification Initiative. Finally, notification letters are mailed to all property owners within 400 feet of a proposed rezone, special use, or planned development.
  • If I have received a public notice, how do I find out more information about that specific project?

Call the ACC Planning Department at 706-613-3515 or email nni@accplanning.com.
  • What kinds of projects require public notification?

All rezone, planned development, special use, and variance proposals require public notification via legal advertisements and sign postings at the subject properties. By adopted policy of the Mayor & Commission, all of the above except variances also require mailed notices to surrounding property owners.

Certificate of Appropriateness applications require sign postings at the subject properties. Demolitions to locally designated historic district structures or landmarks also require notice via a legal advertisement.
